Gigapop Routing Policy
The following text describes the currently implemented routing
policy within Autonomous System 101. This routing policy is subject
to change without notice. For more information on this topic, please
contact the Network Operations Center at 206 934 5580 or noc@pnw-gigapop.net.
General
Client route filtering:
All clients must inform the Network Operations Center of all prefixes
that they intend to announce to ASN 101. ASN 101 utilizes an exact
match philosophy when creating prefix filters.
MED behavior:
deterministic MEDs
Dual-homed peer egress point selection:
nearest exit
RFC 1918 addresses:
Any route for RFC1918 address space will be rejected.
Private use Autonomous Systems:
Any route with a private use ASN in the path will be discarded.
BGP community declarations
ASN 101 will accept the following BGP
communities from our clients:
Containment
101:10100 Do not announce to commodity Internet
101:10200 Do not announce to HPNSP (Abilene/Internet2, etc.)
101:10300 Do not announce to commodity peers
101:10400 Do not announce to Research and Education network peers
AS-PATH prepends
101:11101 Prepend AS 101 once to commodity Internet
101:11102 Prepend AS 101 twice to commodity Internet
101:11103 Prepend AS 101 three times to commodity Internet
101:11201 Prepend AS 101 once to HPNSP (Abilene/Internet2, etc.)
101:11202 Prepend AS 101 twice to HPNSP (Abilene/Internet2, etc.)
101:11203 Prepend AS 101 three times to HPNSP (Abilene/Internet2,
etc.)
101:11301 Prepend AS 101 once to commodity peers
101:11302 Prepend AS 101 twice to commodity peers
101:11303 Prepend AS 101 three times to commodity peers
101:11401 Prepend AS 101 once to Research and Education network
peers
101:11402 Prepend AS 101 twice to Research and Education network
peers
101:11403 Prepend AS 101 three times to Research and Education
network peers
local-preference
101:12000 Reduce local-preference to 80 inside AS 101
ASN 101 sets the following BGP communities on all outbound announcements
to participants:
101:20000 Route learned from a client of AS 101
101:20100 Route learned from commodity Internet service provider
101:20200 Route learned from HPNSP (Abilene/Internet2, etc.)
101:20300 Route learned from a commodity peer
101:20400 Route learned from a Research and Education network peer
Notice
The PNWGP has implemented more community based ingress filtering
than originally anticipated.
Specifically, if a participant is receiving limited versions of
transit service from PNWGP and applying an AS-PATH prepend community
to their routes that does not apply to the transit service that
the participant is receiving, then those routes will be rejected.
For example, if a participant that is receiving only Intragigapop
services sets a community to AS-PATH prepend to the commodity Internet
or Abilene/Internet2, then those routes will be rejected by PNWGP.
Similarly, if a participant receiving only Commodity Internet
services sets the community to AS-PATH prepend to Abilene/Internet2,
then those routes will be rejected. Likewise, if a participant
receiving only Abilene/Internet2 services sets the community to
AS-PATH prepend to the commodity Internet, then those routes will
be rejected.
